Great Explorations is a summer enrichment program for young people presented by the Boothbay school system. It runs for two weeks following the 4th of July. Programs include arts and crafts, cooking, and nature studies. Classes are 90 minutes long each morning. For more information about Great Explorations contact the Boothbay Elementary School during May or June.
The volunteer Boothbay Model Railroaders have been conducting Great Explorations classes in Model Railroading since 2005. The class is limited to 10 children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old; no modeling experience is necessary. During 2 week the class each child makes their own 18”x24” diorama that includes track, a road, hills made from Styrofoam and plaster, plaster rock castings, trees and vegetation made from ground foam, a building and a railroad car. In addition to the diorama, children learn how a steam locomotive works, tour the Boothbay Railway Village and ride the train.
