Taught by sculptor Anne Alexander
Learn how to carve the soft stone of soapstone and create a relief sculpture that can be used as a bedwarmer. Soapstone bedwarmers have been used for hundreds of years, and are still warming cold sheets in fall and winter. The stones are placed near a woodstove or other heat source, wrapped in a towel and put in bed. Their warmth is especially comforting during our chilly Maine winters.
Participants will learn to carve this soft stone using rasps, files and chisels. The pieces will be finished using wet sanding paper in various grits to achieve a soft sheen to the stone. Carve an animal, a shell, a flower, an abstract form, or whatever you envision. Examples will be available for inspiration.
